Banks, currency

The currency is the Swiss Franc (CHF). In July approx. 2008 rates, €1 = CHF 1.63 , US$1 = CHF 1.03. The euro is widely accepted, but visitors should expect to pay a premium rate. All major credit cards are accepted in most hotels, restaurants and shops. ATMs (known as bancomats in Geneva) are widely avail- able throughout the city, dispensing notes from CHF 20 to CHF 200 as well as Euros.

Car rental

A large number of car rental companies have outlets in Geneva. Most car rent companies have desks at the airport.

Climate

Whether in winter or summer, temperate weather and localized microclimates are common in and around Geneva, although the famed "bise" (a harsh north wind) can bring a touch of coldness to the fresh and pure air for which the region is renowned. End of August should offer warm weather, but do not forget to bring adequate clothing for cool evenings and the occasional rain shower. Temperatures during the day of up to 25°C (77°F) should be expected but these may drop to 10°C (50°F) in the evenings and nights.

Disability

The Palexpo Convention Centre, Geneva public transport, and most hotels offer special access for disabled people.

Dress, attire

Comfortable, smart casual attire is recommended during the Congress.

Electricity

The electricity supply in Switzerland is 230 volts with Swiss 3-pin plugs. Most US appliances require a converter and a plug adaptor to operate, but dual-voltage items such as laptops require only an adaptor. European appliances may also require an adaptor as the Swiss 3-prong outlet system is smaller than most continental plugs.

Health and safety

Geneva is a generally safe city with few violent crimes. However, petty crime such as pickpocketing is common around the airport, and central train station. The usual precautions should be taken. Top-quality hospitals and clinics are available 24 hours throughout the city.

Time zone

In August, Swiss time is GMT +2.

Tipping

The service charge is included in the price of food and drinks in restaurants and bars. It is customary to round up amounts when paying the waiter or waitress if you're happy with the service. For exceptional service, common sense is the best guide to tipping.

Transport

Getting to Geneva
Given its central position in Europe, Geneva is well connected to the outside world, whether by train, plane or car. Flight information can be found on the Geneva airport website (www.gva.ch) and train schedules and ticketing information can be found at www.cff.ch. Road itineraries can be obtained from www.viamichelin.ch.

Transport within Geneva
For all delegates arriving at Geneva airport, a free public transport ticket valid 80 minutes after arrival is available for pick up in the baggage collection area. In addition, a transportation pass for the days you are staying in a Geneva hotel can be picked up at your hotel upon arrival. This pass is valid for all public transport (bus, train, tram and the "mouette" boat within the Geneva harbor area). For more details on the public transport network visit: www.tpg.ch.

Travel and health insurance

We recommend that Congress participants take out personal insurance policies to cover medical and travel insurance. Your travel agent can advise.

VAT

Swiss VAT is charged at 7.6%. It is usually included in the published price of goods and services. If you have bought items to take home with you it is worth checking the VAT amount since, for larger items, it may be reclaimed when leaving the country.
