Head of Health Education, Portuguese League Against Cancer (LPCC), Portugal

Cristiana Fonseca works in the Portuguese League Against Cancer (LPCC), serving as Head of Health Education since 1999 and, since 2017, the Capacity Building Department. She works closely with communities – including schools, municipalities, and companies – as well as health professionals on projects aimed at improving heath literacy and promoting the adoption of healthier behaviours. In 2007, Cristiana was a member of the organising committee for the European Conference on Tobacco and Health (ECToH) in Porto. 

Cristiana represents the Portuguese League Against Cancer in several international forums. She recently completed a six-year term (2018-2024) on the Board of Directors of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), where she contributed to several committees, including those focused on membership and capacity building.  

Within the Association of European Cancer Leagues (ECL), Cristiana has been actively involved in initiatives related to the European Code Against Cancer. She was invited by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) to join the group of experts in communication for the 5th edition of the Code. From 2020 to 2024, she served as Chair of the Prevention and Early Detection Working Group. 

Cristiana’s primary focus areas include cancer prevention, health literacy and capacity building projects, which reach thousands of individuals each year. 

She holds a degree in Psychology and a Master’s in Health Education, and a postgraduate in Health Literacy.
